What's in a Name?

So, Steve and I have been having lots of discussion about names. The JuneBug's name is going to be a surprise, but we think we've narrowed it down to a couple. Instead of choosing the exact name before the baby comes, I think we're going to stick with our short list of "maybes" and wait to see which one suits the JuneBug upon arrival.

In the meantime, I can assure you that none of the names we are considering appear anywhere on this hilarious website. An snippet (italics are comments by the site author):

Keerazee cpellyngz:

Jaxson Abelardo

Adyn Bridger

Antwon Lydell
This one drives me crazy. Antoine is a perfectly good name - if you really don't think people can pronounce it, pick something else. Otherwise it looks like the results of Ant vs. Rubbertree. Yup, Ant won.

Skylar Makinzy

Jayden Mokol

Cleo Janene

Kittie Catheryn
Despite her allergies, Mom was determined to have a pet cat by one means or another.
- Katie

Karryllinne Sweet
I must've stared at this for five minutes before I figured out it's just Caroline.

Other suggestions:

Brittany after the statue- Brittania
'Cause nothing in, say, France is called Britanny. Nothing big like a province. Nothing else in England called Britannia, either. Nothing big like...England.

Their hatred of this particular woman is the only thing England and France have agreed on since 1066.

I am 7 months pregnant, and I am having a boy. I think i'm going to name my son Kakinston , What do you think... ??
Besides sounding like a former Central Asian Soviet republic bordering Uzbekistan, it aids small bullies immensely starting the kid's name with KACK.

These are some of my fave boys and girls names and i would sooo much appreciate any comments you have!!! thanx! (or just pick out your faves from my list if u dont want to comment on them all!)
Girls:
Ariana (aw ree AH nuh)
Aubriana (aw bree AH nuh)
Ambria (am BREE uh)
Avery (AY vree)
Brinley (BRIN lee)
Charity (CHAIR it ee)
Demi (DEM ee)
Desirae (des er AY)
OK, I'll cut this off right here. This lady's crazy. She clearly sits around all day thinking up adorable names that work very well on cats. Scads and scads of them. Then she spells them phonetically VERY carefully, yet can't make a cohesive sentence on her own.

Havana (huh VAN uh)
Jade (JAYD)
Jerica (JAIR ick uh)
Kamrei (KAM ree)
Karis (kuh REESE)
Kaylana (kay LAW nuh)
Here she gets mean. She dishes out some names that aren't even close to names, then insists they get pronounced in ways unlike they're spelled. I'll cut to the end.

Phoenix (FEE nicks)
Rhianyn (ree ANN in)
Shailyn (SHAY linn)
Siena (see EHN uh)
Trinity (TRIN it ee)
Valerie (VAL ehr ee)
Valerie? What the hell kind of name is that? Freak!

If you need a good laugh, take the time to read her whole Bad Baby Name section. Guaranteed hilarity! Cheers!

Crafty Momma

Maybe it's a form of nesting, but since finding out about the baby coming, I've been getting reacquainted with my crafty side. You've seen the pics of our nursery in progress, I've also been doing some little-women work, like needlepoint and knitting. I've done some cross-stitch embroidery on a few onesies, here are the pics:

And a close up of the big bunny:

I'm also working on a sweater, but it's kind of been put on the back burner by the nursery painting project. I am nearly done what will become the back of the sweater, but haven't had a chance to take a picture yet. Soon enough. Cheers!

One-legged Wonder

I had my latest midwife appointment Thursday evening, and Sky confirmed what I suspected (and had diagnosed myself with, thanks to my medical degree from Google University): I have Symphysis Pubis Diastasis. Which sounds kind of super scary, but is really just a minor inconvenience.

Essentially, my hormones, in their infinite wisdom, are preparing my body to have this baby by causing all my joints etc. to loosen. Good times. However, my pelvis is loosening so much, that I am feeling a bit of discomfort from it.

Did you know your pelvic bone is actually three bones? One across the back, and then two on either side at the front, which meet at your pubic bone. This meeting in the middle is where I am having pain. (Although, I hesitate to call it "pain", because mostly it is more annoying than painful. It's certainly bearable for everyday movement, it's like a constant dull ache, and only when I walk. Which is definitely bearable, but I'm not doing my 4K walks anymore, that's for sure.)

So, score one for my pelvis getting larger for the purpose of what I can only assume will be the easiest birth ever (!) but score negative one for me, because it's not entirely comfy to walk anymore. Or to stand on one leg, which causes more pulling on this joint. (Steve's question: Why are you standing on one leg? How do you even know that?? Answer: When I put on my pants. Or my socks. Or my boots. Try it. I bet you'll find that you too stand on one leg many times in a day!)

Solution: I am now sitting on the bed to put on my pants/socks, and sitting in a chair to put on my boots. Sky has also recommended that I see a chiropractor, who can make sure my stretchy pelvis isn't throwing anything else out of whack, and will probably also recommend some stretches or exercises to try and ease things.

So, on a scale of 1-10 of "yucky things I would choose to happen to myself when pregnant", with 1 being nothing whatsoever, and 10 being constant debilitating nausea and vomiting like my poor friend Kathleen, this one scores a 4 - a bit annoying, but manageable. I'll take it!

Something else that helps alleviate the discomfort of SPD is swimming. The weightlessness of water helps relieve some of the tension. Of course, you have to limit yourself to regular little flutter kicks - no breast-stroke style frog-kicking, or big, splashing kicks, because these movements increase the pressure on your pelvis. So, I have decided to swim a few days a week, to see if it helps. (Also, in the past 4 weeks, since I haven't been able to do my regular walks, I put on 11 pounds, and am now measuring two weeks ahead in fundal height. So swimming will also help keep my weight gain manageable!)

Can you see where this is going?

Of course. I had to buy maternity swimwear. Now, I was not about to spend big bucks on this, because a) it's maternity swimwear, for crying out loud, we're going for function, not fashion, and b) who knows how much swimming I'll actually be doing until I try it - don't want to make a huge investment here. So I nipped out to Wal-Mart at lunch to see what they had. Did you know that Wal-Mart carries maternity swimwear? Neither did I, but I was hoping. :) I got a lovely maternity tankini. It's black. The bottom has a very unflattering cut, and although Steve says I look "cute" in it, I have a feeling that has more to do with my unusually high level of general cuteness than it does with the suit. But you know what? It will work, and it cost less than $30. So, I'm very happy. (Not to mention the fact that I could mix and match tops and bottoms, which is good, considering I needed the XXL top and only L for the bottom.) And, as long as I remember to sit down when I change in and out of it, I hope that I'll be feeling much better soon. Cheers!

A Room of One's Own

Last week was March Break for Steve, and I took a few days off work so we could play together. We spent a lovely long weekend in Ottawa with Auntie Kristi and Uncle Ryan, and Auntie Kristi helped pick out the light fixture for the JuneBug's room. (And carried it safely through IKEA for me, even though it wasn't that heavy. That's just the kind of sister she is.) It's perfect:

Our other project for the week was to start decorating the JuneBug's room. Our theme is Dr. Seuss (NOT the Cat in the Hat. I do not like the Cat in the Hat, even before the mind-numbingly awful Mike Meyers movie came out.) Steve borrowed an overhead projector from school, and we made transparencies of our favourite characters and projected them on the wall to use as paint templates, and got to work. We painted the background a really nice green (somewhere between Granny Smith Apple green, and celery green):

We have a pretty good system - Steve does the (multiple!) coats of colour for the critters, and then I do the detailed outlining.

The bad news is, it's taking much longer than we thought. The good news is, it's turning out way, WAY better than we ever thought. We're quite proud of ourselves. We're a little ambitious - once finished, the room will include such loveables as the Sneetches, the Lorax, and the turtles from Yertle the Turtle. So far, we've just finished one character completely: the Yop. He goes "hop, hop, hop, from fingertop to fingertop". I think he's in One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. The balloons from Oh, The Places You'll Go are just having the details finished up, and the little bears (are they bears? Maybe they're something else?) from Hop on Pop are awaiting another coat of yellow. Work in progess:

More pictures to follow as the room comes together. We have our crib all ready to put together once all the painting is done, and we have a change table/dresser and a rocking chair - pretty much everything we need. And three whole months to finish everything off in. Of course, this room puts the rest of our house to shame - it's all still the builder beige that we chose for our one colour (see previous post of me standing in front of a door for a sample of builder beige on the walls). All in good time. Cheers!

The Lady in Red

I don't think I have any recent photos of me not pregnant - at least, none that show me standing up. So I guess you'll just have to imagine the "before" shot. But now, for your viewing pleasure - Cari, with 6-month JuneBug belly:

Please excuse the photo quality, Steve is napping (poor guy, his class gave him a raging headache today) so that photo is courtesy of the bookshelf in our office, and the digital timer. Ahh, technology.

That's my favourite maternity shirt, I think it's quite cute. And I really like the pants too - GAP Maternity Long and Lean, via eBay. So, now you can all see how gorgeous and divine I look these days. :) Cheers!

Welcome to my world...

Well, I probably should have done this some time ago, but better late than never. This blog is a way for all my distant friends and family (and boy, there sure are a lot of you. Why do so many people I love have to live so far away??) to all get updated at once as we get closer to The Big Day. June 24th, 2006 - the day the Prince or Princess of Howieland, aka the JuneBug will make his/her appearance.

(Maybe I should insert an aside here that yes, Steve and I are kind of nerds, and refer to our home/car/anywhere we are in charge as "Howieland". As in, these are the rules of Howieland, we are the King and Queen of Howieland, and so on and so forth.)

Since this is my first post, I'm going to keep it short, so I can play around with settings and stuff. Stay tuned for pics of me at the start of my 6th month, and pics of the JuneBug's room (currently under decoration.) Welcome, and cheers.
